It’s National Safety Week and the National Fall Prevention Stand Down Week in the USA! While we at Crane Tech applaud and celebrate this week along with thousands of employers across the nation, we think everyone will agree that safety is about more than a one week focus. It is a factor of day in and day out
decisions, sometimes it is about second by second, moment by moment decisions that were made, some of which can impact us greatly or be near misses.
If you have been reading the Hooked On Crane Tech blog for a while, you can tell that we like to re-tell stories that have been told to us by those with years of field experience. On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to hear from Charlie
Morecraft, motivational safety speaker, at the Alliance for Central Florida Safety – Safety Day 2016. He spoke about how he knew all the safety regulations, but he knew all the short cuts too. What ever it took to get the job done, he would do. He was certain that nothing could go wrong—nothing would happen to him—it would happen to the other guy. He was right except this one time. When a series of small seemingly unrelated decisions not to follow company policies and just get the job done nearly cost him his life. The key take away? To remember that Safety is Personal. Take responsibility for yourself and remember that safety begins with you.
With this in mind, and in effort to write something unique about safety (because what can we share that hasn’t already been said about safety), we share Marketing Manager Katie’s experience:
When I first started at Crane Tech I was told that “We do NOT train.” But wait, I thought…we are company that provides training services…. then I heard the rest of the explanation and I captured this statement to remind myself everyday what the Crane Tech vision is: “We do NOT train. We educate… We impart knowledge…We share our skills and experience to work SAFELY and RELIABLY.” This is what I look at every day (literally I made this little note pictured below and it is taped to my computer). It is what I think about every week when developing the content for the Weekly Tagline and what I contemplate about when I hear stories of success and failure, and what guides me as I market Crane Tech. It is my way of making safety “personal,” albeit from behind my desk, where there is not a lot of risk day in and day out.
With this being said, we would like to challenge you to make safety “personal.” Being safe every day, week after week, year after year crosses competitive, trade and task boundaries. It does not matter if you are in the office, in the field, or in the plant; it connects all of us — not just to each other in the industry, but to everyone who depends on us at home too. So not just this week, but every day, look at how you are making safety “personal,” because we are stronger and safer together.
- Are you practicing what you preach?
- Are you making the right decisions for not just your safety but the safety of others?
- Are you inspiring others from wherever you may lead, whether it be from behind a desk or out in the field?
- Are you recognizing those who took a stance for safety?
- Are you celebrating success and using failures as stepping stones toward greatness?
We’d love to hear from you. Feel free to post a comment or email us us how you are making safety “personal.” Until then, have a safe day!
